Today was the first day Maria went outside. Maria felt that she hadn't been outside for an eternity: the day before the birth it was snowing wildly, but today was a mild spring day and the crocuses were blooming.

We are very keen to get a (British) passport for Chiara ASAP so we can travel to Germany for the baptism. However, the UK passport stipulations are very clear: (1) even a newborn baby requires a passport; (2) the photo must show the subject wearing a neutral expression looking forward with open eyes and no other people visible. This is the photo we ended up using (with a bit of later cropping and touching up in photoshop). The "neutral expression" she is wearing is more of a disgruntled expression from being treated in such an undignified fashion.

We haven't even begun to think about getting a German passport. Probably we'll need to get dozens of forms approved by the high court in Berlin asserting that, yes, indeed, Maria is: (1) German; and (2) a woman. ;)
